What is the UGL Mario Kart Championship of Champions?

The UGL Mario Kart Championship of Champions is a year long Grand Prix, where 6 teams of 2 players race each Mario Kart grand prix each month, accumulating total points to become the UGL Mario Kart Champion.

How does it work?

In a Grand Prix, each driver earns points based on their ending position in each race. Positions closer to first earn more points than positions further from first (for simplicity sake, we will use the points that the game provides). The drivers accumulate their points from each race towards a total, which decides their final position in the standings at the end of the season.

Because the drivers are entering in teams of two. There are two cups to fight for;

  • The Driver’s Cup; A free-for-all fight to be the driver with the most points individually

  • The Collector’s Cup; Combining the points from both drivers to be the team who had collected the most points throughout the season

Using F1 as an template, where drivers and teams are both measured.

How are the races organized?

There are 12 total Grand Prix cups in Mario Kart 8, so by dividing the 12 Grand Prix into 3 series, each with 4 cups, we can race one cup each month.

Qualifying

Groups of 2-3 teams complete the qualifying Grand Prix and their team’s placement decides which skill tier they would be placed (1st placed team starts Pro, 2nd place Intermediate, 3rd place Rookie). Each race can have a maximum total of 12 players (6 teams). Depending on the number of entries, players are broken up into multiple skill tiers (I.e. Pro, Intermediate, and Rookie).

If uneven numbers can cause empty spots in each series, a wildcard fight-out for the fastest teams in the lower skill tier give teams a second chance to fight in the skill tier above (i.e. the faster Intermediate teams can be bumped up to Pro series to fill empty spots, and same with Rookie->Intermediate)

Series

With the year broken up into 3 series, teams can move from each skill tier up and down based on their racing performance. The best 2 teams of the intermediate skill tier move into the pro skill tier, and the worst 2 teams of the pro skill tier move down into the intermediate skill tier. Apply the same logic to the Rookie and Intermediate.

Match Setup

On the main menu, hit L + R + Click the Left Thumb Stick all at the same time, you should see “Wireless Play” turn in to “LAN Play”. Select the 2P option (both players of the team MUST play on the same display/console). One team will host from their console, while the others will join. Select your characters and customize your karts/bikes. Make sure all Assists are turned off (If you want to use tilt controls, be my guest).

HOST:

While in the room, set up the settings to the following:

RACE COMPLETION:

If the race is NOT a qualifying series, one console will be responsible for favoriting the replay. Points will also be recorded each race in case of error.

QUALIFYING RESULTS:

Players will be placed based on their results during qualifying. The team with the most points will be placed into the Pro Series, and the team with the least points will be placed into the Rookie Series.

Hey, I can’t make it to one of my races, can I have someone sub in for my spot?

Yes! But they cannot already be participating in a higher skill bracket (I.e. a Pro player cannot be a substitute for an Intermediate player), and their points will not contribute to the driver they are substituting (They will be contributing to the team points, though)
